Hi all,
Mr Wons. Thanks for the note on Kerry, I’m not as generous as you are to the man, but we agree in the end. Matt, thanks for putting me on the spot with Andrew Sullivan, that is pretty crazy that you met him and had the presence of mine to think of him given you saw a bald guy on a mountain bike.
In fact, just prior to reading your blog, I read a clip from his blog that strongly irritated me. Some musings about how not a red cent of reconstruction money has been doled out. Not sure where he gets his information from, but there are certain levels of classification out there, of which he is privy to NONE. My sources have indicated millions have been used in reconstruction of this country. Perhaps it hasn’t come out of an official reconstruction budget, but there are certain parts of this country who have more reliable electricity now, than they ever did under Saddam, AND we haven’t even begun to thoroughly revamp this infrastructure, we are just patching a hemorrhaging patient until we can put down this insurgency. More often than not, when we try and do something nice for these people, thugs come in and bomb what we started. This presents a serious. Security has to be established and enforced prior to this country making any big strides. Another tangible benefit is the attention focused here in Iraq for these thugs from all over the world. They bide their time battling us here, and not trying to infiltrate our borders and performing fatally fantastic terrorist actions like the Chechens pulled on the Russians. Can you imagine if an elementary school in Anywhere, USA was assaulted by terrorists? Can you imagine how the anti-war tone would change in a matter of seconds? Well this has not happened yet, Sep 11th is dead in a lot of American’s mind. It’s not dead in anyone serving here. For all the talk about WMD, and links to Al Qaeda, it is superfluous to the real reason we came here, to destroy an enemy of America. It may seem like a mess, and again, I refer to the unclassified, liberal slanted reporting you all get in the open source media, CNN, FOX, TIME, NEWSWEEK. None of them know the whole story out here.
The Rules of Engagement here are designed to protect the Iraqi population along with allowing small unit commander’s the flexibility to make the tough decisions on the ground. Everything we do is designed to help these people, some see it and help us, others are frightened by the thugs, and others don’t care one way or another. Every day there are reports of local Iraqis fed up with freedom fighters and thug splinter cells who point out arms caches to Coalition Forces and point out planted IEDs to Coalition Forces. The tide is turning, albeit slowly. One thing the thugs are afforded right now is a safe haven, that is Fallujah. Until that is effectively denied them, they will continue to be able to retreat to the center of that city.
Anyways, I’ll try and formulate something for Andrew Sullivan. I get irritated when I can’t tell the whole story, and I can’t because a lot of good stuff is classified. If you knew the extraordinary means that our country is taking to win this war and minimize collateral damage while exacting precision punishment on the thugs it would plain floor you.
I have to get to bed, early rise tomorrow. The weather is most agreeable these days, high 90’s in the day, and low 70’s in the evenings and mornings, almost feels like Fall, my favorite season.
